Seen any skipping lately?

First of all, what's the common West Coast nomenclature? Is it skipping (skip rope) or jumping (jump rope)? I'm not of this land.

So, has anyone spotted any overt or covert skipping lately? What neighborhood? Street name? School yard?

I am soooo longing to see it, hear it, join in. I don't want to start mourning for yet another dying fundamental lowtech art (although I have to say from Little Girl's doubleduchess escapades shown in a photo of her profile above) it definitely isn't low skill. I see a lot of fumbly bumbly little kids these days who at 5 and 6 stumble over their awkwardly quickly growing feet. I think the skipping, double dutch, hopscotch, and handball we did in our day growing up (at least from my pt of view in Toronto, Canada) really helped us grow comfortable and confident and refine our gross motor skills.

Also, I have been looking for the old pink long rubber skipping ropes we used to have 23 years ago. Now I see some rope, but not often, and then some cheap junk made of metallic or neon plastic. Please let me know if you spot the old rubber variety around anywhere.

Maybe not quite in the middle of the street (City repair style in Portland, Oregon, where mandalas were painted in residential intersections to alleviate longtime traffic problems-- amazing community transformation arose!!!) Maybe hopscotch is still somewhat prevalent, but what about doing doubles with a skipping rope (Canadian version of jump rope). Or just skipping for that matter? I rememer we used to do this doubles chant where you jump in when the month you were born is called out. I can't remember how it starts, though. Anyone?

I used to tie an end of two jump ropes to a fence and I would turn, so that my sister could jump in, and then we'd switch. That's how we resolved playing doubles with only two people (the objective of which is of course, not only to turn the rope, but for someone to jump in):)

I'm putting out a call for anyone that has a conundrum they would like to share.... I used to know a couple and those brain cells upon which the information has been stored have long ago been fryed, so I'm trying to compensate with new mental challenges...
