First of all, what's the common West Coast nomenclature? Is it skipping (skip rope) or jumping (jump rope)? I'm not of this land.
So, has anyone spotted any overt or covert skipping lately? What neighborhood? Street name? School yard?
I am soooo longing to see it, hear it, join in. I don't want to start mourning for yet another dying fundamental lowtech art (although I have to say from Little Girl's doubleduchess escapades shown in a photo of her profile above) it definitely isn't low skill. I see a lot of fumbly bumbly little kids these days who at 5 and 6 stumble over their awkwardly quickly growing feet. I think the skipping, double dutch, hopscotch, and handball we did in our day growing up (at least from my pt of view in Toronto, Canada) really helped us grow comfortable and confident and refine our gross motor skills.
Also, I have been looking for the old pink long rubber skipping ropes we used to have 23 years ago. Now I see some rope, but not often, and then some cheap junk made of metallic or neon plastic. Please let me know if you spot the old rubber variety around anywhere.

Re: Seen any skipping lately?
Tue, August 10, 2004 - 5:38 PMYou need to go to jumpropestore.com
We get all of our ropes from there. They have really great beaded ropes and they'll put your name on the handles.
I don't know if you've checked out our website, but it's doubledutchess.com
also check out some videos here:

Re: Seen any skipping lately?
Sat, September 11, 2004 - 9:50 AMThanks much,
I'm going to check out the jumprope site. When in Toronto last month I had a mission to look for my old pink rubber jumprope, and missed out on the chance when I was there...
I've been collecting some books on jumprope rhymes because I'm really curious and intrigued by different/similar songs that develop thousands of miles away, on separate schoolyard grounds. I was renewing my healthcard in Toronto when sitting behind me were two kids doing a hand-pat game that was so similar to what I grew up with, but some different hand moves and some changed word lines.
I need to retire early from my teaching job (I'm 30) and pursue my anthropological curiosities, hanging out on playgrounds and sidewalks and recording jumprope and hand moves and songs. If you are looking for a career change some day, maybe we could go on a road trip in pursuit of lost and new moves everywhere...
When I checked your website, I would get linked up to a default site... I'll try again. I did see the photos on your Tribe profile. Wow! I teach 2.5 to 5 year olds... would your crew be interested in coming to do a demonstration of your acrobatix?
